But if this is the case in your home, it’s time that you may want to rethink about your morning schedule to ensure that you take some time out from your busy schedule to eat something. As per new research, missing breakfast even for once a week can elevate your blood sugars and increase your risk for diabetes.

As per a study done by German researchers, if you have the tendency of skipping breakfast even very occasionally, you have the chances of a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The researchers also found that skipping breakfast even once a week will have a 6% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is less common and is often diagnosed at an early stage of life but type 2 diabetes develops in people after the age of 45. The risk factors include being overweight and also being physically inactive.

But both types of diabetes make it difficult for your body to have complete control of amount of sugar in the blood. In case of type 2 diabetes, the body develops a resistance to insulin. And when it is left unchecked, the insulin, and the blood sugar can rise very abnormally and can have a deep effect on the heart, nerves.

Breakfast and Type 2 Diabetes

Many experts have expressed that if one regularly has breakfast, diabetes becomes easily manageable. There are several studies to prove this. In one of the studies, overweight women who ignored breakfast had developed higher insulin and blood sugar levels after having lunch as compared to days when they ate breakfast. In another study, it was found that overweight patients who had Type 2 diabetes who fasted till lunchtime had experienced significant spikes in blood sugars and that too throughout the day. As per researchers, when you skip breakfast, the beta cells in the pancreas forget to release insulin when no food is taken between dinner and lunch of the following day.

The key to having a healthy morning breakfast is that you choose a variety of foods so that you can get a balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals and also the much required fiber that would help you manage your blood sugar levels. Following are the few options that you can consider for your breakfast.

Whole grains: Wheat flakes, whole wheat chapatti, bread, whole grain millet preparations, oatmeal are all good options to choose from.

Fruits & Vegetables: A fresh fruit in the morning as part of your breakfast will provide you the fiber, vitamins and minerals. But try to eat the whole fruit and skip the fruit juice. You can also take vegetable soups or add vegetables like carrot, leafy greens like palak and methi in curries and parathas and make it part of your breakfast.

Dairy: As per research, drinking milk in the morning and also if consumed with breakfast cereal helps reduce blood glucose concentration, as compared with water. It also has the benefit of high dairy protein concentration reducing postprandial blood glucose concentration as compared to other normal dairy protein concentration.
